PROBLEM 1:

CIGARETTE BUTTS ARE PLASTIC WASTE

It has become common sense that plastic straws or bottles do not belong on our beaches, oceans, mountains or anywhere in nature really.. but when you look around you, the same does not seem to apply for cigarette butts! However, what we are carelessly throwing on the ground is not only toxic waste that is released into the environment... the filters in cigarette butts are made of cellulose acetate, a non-biodegradable plastic, which can take up to 25 years to decompose!

PROBLEM 2: ONE CIGARETTE BUTT POLLUTES HUNDREDS OF LITERS OF WATER

Cigarette butts contain up to 60 known carcinogens, and they leach chemicals such as cadmium, lead and arsenic within an hour of contact with water. The butt will not stay where you dropped it, but wind and rain will eventually transport it around so that the butt will end up in into the natural water cycle eventually. This poses a realistic threat to water quality and the organisms in proximity.  Especially since cigarette butts are the most prevalent type of debris collected in beach clean-ups around the world.

PROBLEM 3: CIGARETTE BUTTS KILL ANIMALS AND HARM HUMANS

Cigarette butts have been ingested by sea turtles, birds, dolphins and other marine life, and in addition to the toxic chemicals they contain, these butts can also cause digestive blockages that lead to death.

If you think about it really, we might even harm ourselves when eating fish or seafood that have previously been in contact with these toxins when they end up on our plates.

Plus let´s be honest: It is not nice on the eye either.
